....a little about the Orchestra...
The NEW MALDEN ORCHESTRA is a South-West London based amateur chamber orchestra and prides itself in a long history of classical music making. The orchestra was founded over sixty years ago in the Kingston area, under the name of REHEARSAL ORCHESTRA and practiced within the walls of the illustrious Malden Town Hall, with the primary objective of providing an opportunity to amateurs and players to join forces and play together the most loved classical repertoire.
The orchestra is committed to exploring a wide variety of repertoire, from baroque to modern, to nurture aspiring musicians and help promote amateur playing in the South-West London area. In the year 2001 the orchestra moved from the former Town Hall into the newly built Malden Community Centre, which currently host our music library - featuring some 400 works - and changed its name into MALDEN CHAMBER ORCHESTRA. Throughout the decades literally hundreds of musicians have enjoyed the wide variety of classical repertoire, from baroque to modern, under the professional guidance of several distinguished conductors such as Joan Laker, Ethel Wilkie, David Benke, more recently Paolo Buttaboni who has taken the baton from 2015. Nonetheless, what has been maintained is its character of a friendly and welcoming ensemble composed of adult players of different standards and age. The NEW MALDEN ORCHESTRA is currently a non-auditioning orchestra, which meets weekly during term times.
We perform a major concert in December to celebrate the festive season: this is an opportunity for the orchestra to showcase its talents as well as to collect funds for charitable causes. During the last two decades we have proudly raised thousands of pounds in support of the Salvation Army: below Mr Tae-yul Hee Kim and Ms. Ryoung-Hee Kim, captains of the New Malden branch of the Salvation Army along with Nicola Moore, General Manager of the Malden Centre (second from the right), Sue Wilson, Education and Activity manager, and our music director Paolo Buttaboni. Both captains Kim have honoured us by visiting the centre on occasion of our last Christmas concert.
